Caregiver Program

Caregiver Program

There are now three different ways to apply for permanent residence, based on Canadian work experience, through the Caregiver Program:

Caring for Children Pathway

You can apply through the Caring for Children class if you have provided full-time child care in a home in Canada for at least two years. We will work with you to obtain your initial work permit and later apply for permanent residency.

Caring for People with High Medical Needs Pathway

You can apply through this pathway if you have been working in Canada for at least 2 years as a registered or licensed practical nurse, nurse aid or orderly, or a home support worker. We will work with you to obtain your initial work permit and later apply for permanent residency.

Live-in Caregiver Program

This program is currently closed to new applicants. If you would like to work as a caregiver in Canada, you must apply for a regular work permit. If you are already working and under the live-in caregiver program, you must have lived in your employer’s home for at least 2 of your first four years in Canada and must have completed 2 years of full-time work as a live-in caregiver. If you were not living in the employer’s home, you may still qualify for permanent residence through the Caring for Children or Caring for People with High Medical Needs classes. Contact us if you are in Canada under this program and wish to apply for permanent residency.
